American Photobooth

At the end of our second episode, Daniel Menaker gives each of our guests a copy of American Photobooth, a stunning book by Näkki Goranin. It's a history of the machine, which first achieved widespread use in the United States, accompanied by hundreds of photos that the author has
collected over the years.

The book's appeal is partly nostalgic, but it's striking how the photobooth has endured. I have shots of myself and friends (and girlfriends) from as recently as a year ago. It seems that, even in the age of digital video and constant online disclosure, there's a thrill in stepping into that booth -- one we can't quite duplicate anywhere else. This book is a beautifully designed, potent reminder of that.
